Biomechanics Research Staff
Sarah A. Hummel, M.S.
Director
Staff Scientist
Ms. Hummel is a Mechanical Engineer and Staff Scientist in the Rehabilitation and Biomechanics Research Laboratory of the Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine
Foundation. She received her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri Rolla in 1997 and joins us after recently receiving
her M.S. from the University of California Davis in 2003. Sarah’s research interests include applications of multi-body dynamics to investigate sport performance
and injury. As a member of the UC Davis club Ultimate Frisbee team her past research was steered towards Frisbee related biomechanics applications. Investigating
all aspects of Frisbee throw dynamics, she analyzed kinematics and kinetics of backhand Frisbee throws. She also performed in depth analysis of Frisbee flight
mechanics and estimation of the Frisbee aerodynamic coefficients using in-flight data collection. Sarah has published and presented several abstracts on Frisbee
sport sciences at the International Sports Engineering Association and the International Symposium on Computer Simulation in Biomechanics Conferences. Sarah is
also an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. When not out playing Ultimate, she also enjoys basketball, volleyball, hiking, and swimming,
soon to include snowboarding too.
