OUR BEGINNING
By the 1980s, Dr. Richard Steadman and others had spent more than a decade proving the theory that involving the body in its own
recovery led to faster and more complete healing. His contributions to the field of orthopaedics began early in his career when
he was one of the first to prescribe exercises for his knee patients right after surgery. Prior to this, the standard medical
treatment was to keep ligaments and joints completely immobilized during recovery.
To Ensure that improvements in healing would continue to be developed and validated, Dr. Steadman formed the Foundation in
1988. In 1990, he was joined by renowned shoulder surgeon Dr. Richard J. Hawkins, and together they brought the Foundation's
research production in knee shoulder studies to a new level.
