Biomechanics Research Laboratory
Dr. Torry is the Director of Research in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory of the Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation. He received his bachelors
degree in Kinesiology/Athletic Training from Illinois State University in 1989, and worked as an Athletic Trainer at the Methodist Sports Medicine Center of
Indianapolis through 1990. Mike received his master's degree in Biomechanics from Illinois State University in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Biomechanics from Southern
Illinois University at Carbondale in 1996. While a student at SIU, he was also awarded the university's highest student achievement award, The Doctoral Dissertation
Award. In 1996, Mike joined the Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation as a Research Fellow, and in two years ascended to the position he currently holds.
Mike has investigated and published several papers dealing with the many aspects of clinical and applied biomechanics including the dynamic performance of little
league and professional baseball pitching, the EMG analysis of shoulder rehabilitation exercises, the evaluation of osteoarthritic gait, the benefits of functional
knee bracing of athletes' knees and the functional performance of ACL injured and reconstructed individuals. Mike’s hard work and leadership has led the BRL to
numerous clinical and scientific awards including the International Society of Biomechanics Clinical Biomechanics Award in 1999, International Society of Biomechanics
Scherb/Novartis Award in 2001, the American Society of Biomechanics Journal of Biomechanics Award in 2002, and a Finalist for the Neer Shoulder Award in 2001.
Additionally, Mike holds Adjunct Faculty positions at the University of Colorado in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology and in the Department of
Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the Colorado State University. He is an active journal article reviewer for the Journal of Orthopedic Research,
Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Archives Physical Medicne and Rehabilitation, Journal of Applied
Biomechanics, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, European Journal of Applied Physiology, the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the journal of
Elbow and Shoulder Surgery. Mike is an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine as well as the American and the International Society of
