Karen K. Briggs, M.B.A., B.S.
Director of Clinical Research

Karen has been with the Foundation since 1993 and has served as Director of Clinical Research since 1994. Karen grew up in Basalt, Colorado, and then received her degree from Colorado State University in Microbiology and Chemistry. She then went to work at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center/University of Colorado Medical School in Denver. Karen worked at the medical school for 8 years. While with the Department of Pediatrics, Karen held the positions of Animal Resource Manager, Assay Development Chemist, Research Associate, and Molecular Biology Laboratory Manager.  In 1992 Karen received her Masters in Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. Karen has recently received her Masters in Public Health from the University of Northern Colorado.  Karen began development of the Clinical Research Database in 1993.  She has co-authored over 40 publications and has presented research at the AOSSM, AAOS, ESSKA, and ISAKOS. Karen lives in Minturn where her family includes husband, Daryn and her Jack Russell Terriers, Taylor Maid and Bogie.

Marilee Horan, BS
Clinical Research Associate

Marilee Horan joined the Steadman-Hawkins Research Foundation in spring of 1998 as Dr. Hawkins clinical research associate. Marilee, a native of Denver, received her degree from the Colorado State University in Microbiology and Chemistry. She began work in the basic sciences at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and has worked in many different capacities. She spent 3 years in the Pathology Department investigating how white blood cells can better fight off Mycobacterium infections. From there Marilee moved to the department of Cell & Structural Biology where she spent many years genetically mapping brain proteins DNA coding sequences, that are developmentally regulated at birth. She then spent 7 years managing a growing molecular biology laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics studying lung disease. Marilee has been involved in over 50 research publications and abstracts. Marilee moved to Vail Valley to escape the city growth in Denver and to enjoy many mountain recreational activities.

Sarah Kelley-Spearing, B.A.
Clinical Research Associate

Sarah joined the Steadman-Hawkins Research Foundation in April of 2006 as Dr. Corenman’s clinical research assistant.  She is working with Dr. Corenman, Dr. Karli and Eric Strauch to develop spine research at Steadman Hawkins, and has begun constructing a spine database and designing several initial studies.  Originally from Stowe, Vermont, Sarah received her degree in Biology in 2005 from Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland.  Sarah lives in Minturn and loves the variety of outdoor activities in the area, especially backcountry skiing.

Lauren M. Matheny, B.A.
Clinical Research Associate

Lauren joined the Steadman-Hawkins Research Foundation in September of 2005 as a clinical research intern and then, in November 2005, joined the team as a full time clinical research assistant to Dr. Sterett.  Lauren, originally from Toledo, Ohio, received her degree in Zoology and Neuroscience in 2005, from Miami University of Oxford, Ohio.  In the past year, Lauren has been involved new studies involving patient satisfaction, outcomes and expectations.  Lauren enjoys the active life of the valley, especially the snowboarding and mountain biking.
