Clinical Research Department
Purpose: To carry out "process" and "outcomes" research in the area of orthopaedic sports medicine which will aid both
physicians and patients in making better informed decisions regarding medical treatment. Clinical research focuses on
results of patient care at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic. We study how patients recover from treatment based on the patient's
assessment of improvement of function and quality of life.
Through these studies, new procedures are validated. Success of all procedures is monitored in an effort to help continually
improve quality of care to patients. We learn from the patients and educate new patients on what to expect during their
treatment and recovery. As patients demand more accountability for quality of health care, clinical research becomes an
essential tool to monitor healthcare. Clinical research maintains a database of patient and physician assessment information.
We collect data on all knee and shoulder patients seen at any Steadman-Hawkins Clinic. We publish research on patient outcomes
following treatment at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in orthopaedic peer reviewed journals which assist in education of
physicians worldwide in new and effective treatments. Clinical research is also involved in several long-term studies.
These track patient outcomes 5 to 10 years after surgery. The goal of these projects is to monitor patients' progress over
a number of years to determine how long they experience continued improvement and whether they require additional surgery.
Clinical research also provides support for various other clinical research projects of the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine
Foundation physicians. For more information call Clinical Research at their new location (970) 479-5783.
