RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP Winners
2006-2007: Arvind Ramanujam, Drexel University

Arvind received his B.E. (Bachelors of Engineering) degree in Instrumentation Engineering from one of the premier schools in the University of Mumbai - India, V.E.S. Institute of Technology. He arrived in the United States of America in September 2004 to pursue his Masters in the field of Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University, Philadelphia. In the Summer of 2005, while still being a student at Drexel, Arvind did his Summer Internship at the Baylor College of Medicine (Texas Medical Centre), Houston – Texas performing research in the field of Respiratory Biomechanics, specifically diaphragm mechanics. He joined the Biomechanics research team at the Steadman Hawkins Research Foundation in Spring 2006 and since then has been with the foundation, actively involved in 3D human motion analysis with Motion Capture/Analysis Systems and 3D-Inverse Dynamics.

Arvind’s research interests are in the field of Biomechanics – specifically Sports Medicine, Motion Capture Systems (Motion Analysis) and Orthopaedic Biomechanics. He also has experience with Finite Element Analysis and Modeling/Simulation. He has a fascination towards a variety of sports and hence enjoys his research in the field of Sports Medicine. His hobbies are Sports (Cricket, Soccer, Badminton), A Capella (music without instruments) and he loves painting.

BRL Interns for 2006

Ron Lawrence SPT, CSCS –University of Wisconsin- La Crosse
Ron was an intern in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory at Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation during the fall of 2006.  While at SHSMF he worked on Golf project, Pitching mechanics project, and Knee Adhesion research.   He is planning on graduating with Master of Physical Therapy degree in December 2006 from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.  Ron has an undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sports Science and has his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification from the NSCA.  Throughout his graduate career, Ron has taken specific interest in orthopedics, sports medicine, and research as it pertains to Physical Therapy.  Ron’s hobbies include biking, hunting, fishing, skiing, and weight lifting.  Ron was a member of Vail Ski Academy from 1999-2000 and was an Athlete Representative for US Skiing from 2002-2004.  Ron is currently a part-time ski coach for Team Norway in Norway, Michigan.

 

Chris Gorga – Vanderbilt
Chris Gorga was an intern in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory at the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation during the summer of 2006.  He is finishing his last undergraduate year at the Vanderbilt University, where he plans to receive a B.E. in Biomedical Engineering.  Throughout his undergraduate career, Chris enjoyed a specific interest in orthopedics and sports medicine as it pertained to biomedical engineering.  Upon graduation, he is planning to pursue a Masters/Doctoral degree in biomedical engineering, sports physiology, or biomechanics.  In his spare time, Chris enjoys running, biking, hiking, and rock climbing.

Amy Engel
Amy is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. She hopes to continue on achieving her Masters’ degree in physical therapy. Amy hopes to work in a sports medicine clinic as well as do some outreach for area schools. While at the Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation Amy participated in a couple different projects including standardizing the return to sport functional test as well as collecting data for research on the biceps tenotomy procedure. In her spare time Amy enjoys running, rollerblading, sand volleyball, and water sports.

Lauren Mason
Lauren currently graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology. She is going to continue to attend UCO and finish up her athletic training degree and then pursue a Master’s degree in physical therapy. While at Steadman Hawkins/Howard Head Sports Medicine Center Lauren worked with physical therapist and the athletic trainers to better her knowledge of each area. In her spare time she enjoys hiking, running, and riding her motorcycle.

Jeffrey Jockel, B.S.
Jeff is an intern in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory at the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation. He is currently working on a study that will analyze the biomechanics of the golf swing, while also writing an article comparing tibial rotation strength following hamstring and patella tendon graft harvest for ACL reconstruction. Jeff received his B.S. in Biology from Bucknell University in 2001, and is currently attending medical school at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in New Jersey. He intends to pursue a career in Orthopedic Surgery, with an emphasis on both the scientific and clinical components of sports medicine. In his free time, Jeff enjoys skiing, fishing, cycling, and inline skating.

Natalie Danaher
Natalie was a Biomechanics intern at the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation during the summer of 2003. Her projects included animating shoulder movement using a 3-Dimensional shoulder model and collecting data to analyze the role of the biceps in arm movement. Natalie will receive a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics focus) at the University of Iowa in the spring of 2004. As a research and development intern at Unilever during the summer of 2002, she worked with chemists to develop a prototype for Dove mild shampoo. While in Vail, Natalie recommends scenic drives, afternoon hikes, Hot Summer Nights at the Ford Amphitheater, and bingo at the Red Lion. In her free time, Natalie enjoys golfing, swimming and cheering the Cubbies on to victory.

Nicky Kreutzer
Nicky is a Biomechanical Research Intern and is currently a junior at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where she is pursuing a degree in Kinesiology with concentration in Sports Medicine. She plans to finish her degree and attend medical school to become a Sports Medicine Physician for a professional sports team. During her time at the SHSMF Nicky worked to come up with a standardized Return To Sports Test that will be used to allow ACL patients to return to the physical activity that they desire. In her spare time Nicky enjoys exercising, hiking and hanging out with her friends.

Tim Shannon
Tim is an intern in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory of the Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation. Tim recently graduated from The Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage, California, as valedictorian and a Robert C. Byrd Scholar. He wishes to combine his passion for business and science in his undergraduate career; he will attend Georgetown University in August 2003 to pursue a degree in Health Studies/Health Systems. He will minor in Spanish and Economics. Tim worked on a golf swing project, conducting an extensive literary search and report, digitizing golf swings on the motion analysis machine, and investigating the EMG levels of eight of the major golf muscles. Tim, enjoys hiking, fishing, and climbing.

Viral Patel, B.E.
Viral is an intern in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory at the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation. He is currently working to analyze the effects of quadriceps weakness on gait. He received a B.E. in Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University in 2002. As an undergraduate, Viral completed research on “Transepithelial Resistance Changes on Cancer Cells” and as a senior Viral designed a MRI compatible pressure transducer for the Radiology Department at Vanderbilt University. After graduation he worked as a consultant for the CFP Group, an architectural firm that concentrates in laboratory/hospital design. He then began to work towards his master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University where he is completing his research titled, “Three-dimensional Gait Analysis with and without Corrective Orthotics in Boys with Hemophilic Arthropathy,”. In his spare time Viral enjoys running, football, hiking, and playing basketball.

Melody Ferris, BS
Melody received her BS in Biology from Regis University in 2002.  Prior to this, Melody was an independent medical consultant for business operations and a services manager for Veryss/Physician’s Corporation.  During her internship, Melody worked with Dr Torry and Dr Corenman in organizing a podium presentation for NSF regarding injuries induced by skiing and snowboarding.  Melody aspires to attend medical school.

Andrew Larson, ME
Drew is a Senior in Mechanical Engineering at Kansas University and aspires to either attend medical school or pursue an advanced degree in Biomedical Engineering. While at SHSMF, Drew built a platform to apply internal and external rotational forces on the knee joint. This device was used to evaluate a newly designed knee brace for an industry sponsor.

Joy Hinnman, MSPT
Joy received her BA in athletic training from University of Mary and is currently completing her rotations for MSPT degree from the University of Wisconsin-LaCross. While at SHSMF, Joy helped collect and process EMG and 3D kinetic data for landing studies. She also collected and helped write a paper concerning gender differences in loading during gait. As of 2003, Joy was hired by the Howard Head PT department which is affiliated with SH Clinic and Foundation.

Molli (Mary) Pflum, B.S.
Molli is an intern in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory of the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation. She is currently working with high tibial osteotomy patients before and after surgery to analyze the clinical outcome of the procedure. She received her BA in Kinesiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1998. As an undergraduate, Molli worked as a research assistant in a genetics lab for three years . She also worked as an exercise physiologist intern in an exercise therapy clinic for chronically ill patients. As a senior, Molli was an intern in a biomechanics lab where she gained an interest in biomechanics and was hired after graduation to help complete a study of motor control changes in older adults. After graduation, Molli moved to Boston where she worked in a genetics lab as a laboratory technician. Molli is currently working toward her master’s degree in Biomechanics at the University of Texas at Austin where she is working on a 3 dimensional model of the knee to calculate forces in the knee during various activities under the direction of Dr. Marcus Pandy, PhD. While a graduate student, she has worked as a teaching assistant for Motor Development and as a research assistant in a biomechanics lab. In her spare time Molli enjoys running, skydiving, and traveling.. Mollie presented this work at the 2002 World Congress of Biomechanics in Calgary. As of 2003, Mollie has received her MS degree and is employed by the SHSMF BRL.

Jon Kedrowski, BA
Jon is currently a Senior in Biology at Valparaiso University and aspires to attend medical school. While at SHSMF, Jon worked on knee bracing research that was published in 2002. As of 2003, Jon is a graduate student at Central Florida.

Aaron Hiller
Aaron Hiller is an intern in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory of the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation and is originally from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he is currently working on bachelor’s degrees in both biology and philosophy. A Morehead Scholar and a recent inductee to the Order of the Grail-Valkyries, Aaron is also active in many aspects campus life outside of the classroom. He serves as the Special Investigations Associate to the Student Attorney General, in which capacity he works to enforce the honor code on campus and acts as counsel to members of student government. As a member of the Carolina Men’s Varsity Crew Team, Aaron aspires to soon recapture a reputation as the fastest rowing team in the South. Before attending UNC, Aaron lived abroad as a participant in Young Judaea’s Year Course in Israel—there he gained experience as a gardener, a student, a forest ranger, and a zookeeper before returning to the United States. This summer, Aaron is working to develop digital models of elite and professional athletes in action. A native Texan, Aaron enjoys listening to country music as well as reading, writing, and playing football. While at SHSMF, “Cubby” digitized gender landing data and processed EMG data for these landing trials. He also processed throwing data for professional quarterbacks.

Heather Medema, MS, ATC
Heather received her BA in finance in 1998 and is currently a MS student in Kinesiology at Illinois State University. While at SHSMF, Heather collected and processed data to be used to calculate shoulder kinetics and kinematics during dynamic rehabilitation exercises. After her internship, Heather was hired by the SH clinic. In 2002, Heather was employed at Biopac, Inc. and is now on teaching faculty at Saint Ambrose University.

Mechtild E. Kramer
Mechtild is an intern at the Steadman-Hawkin's Biomechanics Research Laboratory. Mac is an exchange student from Munich, Germany. In order to gain experience abroad and to improve her English skills she came to Vail/Colorado in November 2000. She worked for a ski hotel during the winter season then applied for a six week internship at the Steadman-Hawkin's Foundation. Her main project is analyzing data collected from ACL injured subjects who were reconstructed with the hamstring graft. Mac will leave the US on July 30th and go back home to Munich. In October 2001 she will start Medical School at the "Ludwig-Max-University" (LMU) in Munich. Mac likes to ski and snowshoe during the winter. In the summer Mac hikes, bikes and plays beach volleyball.

Chris Finch
Chris is a volunteer intern in the biomechanics research laboratory. Chris is an outstanding senior at Battle Mountain High School and is an avid soccer player. Chris aspires to enter medical school after completion of his senior year and is considering Notre Dame as his undergraduate college.

Cullen Griffith, BS
Cullen received his BS from Cornell in 2000 and aspires to attend medical school. In the interim, Cullen volunteered in the BRL and helped collects and digitize bone pin data related to shoulder kinematics and kinetics.

Erica Booth
Erica Booth is a Morehead Scholar currently attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she is pursuing a degree in Athletic Training and Exercise Science. Erica has collaborated on research projects with Dr. Bill Garrett and the Sports Medicine Research Lab at the University of North Carolina. She is currently working with Dr. Spero Karas on a project comparing the kinesthesia and proprioception of ACL deficient, and ACL reconstructed populations. Erica is a member of the Student Athletic Trainers Association and enjoys hiking, playing rugby and experiencing Halloween on Franklin Street. She is looking forward to an internship in Australia next summer and a future career in Sports Medicine. Ask Erica about her performance at the 70’s party.

Tara Holmes
Tara Holmes is currently an intern in the Biomechanics Research Lab. She recently graduated from Illinois State University with a B.S. degree in Exercise Physiology. Tara is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. She will be attending Illinois State University to pursue a masters degree in Biomechanics. While at the Foundation, Tara worked on ankle bracing and functional knee bracing studies. Tara will return to the Foundation to complete her Master's thesis work investigating the influence of intra-articular knee joint effusion on lower extremity mechanics.

Patrick Siparsky
Patrick Siparsky is currently a student at Boston University majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology. Originally from Denver, he enjoys participating in tennis, flag football, and water-polo. He is currently working on a project using MRI to measure muscle cross-sectional area in the ACL-reconstructed leg and assessing the isokinetic strength of ACL reconstructed patients. He has also just begun the process of applying to medical school and will continue working in biomechanics at Harvard/MIT while finishing his undergraduate education in Boston. Patrick aspires to be an orthopedic surgeon.

Ashley Critchlow, BS
Ashley received her BS from Colgate University in 1999. She is currently seeking graduate admittance into a PhD program in Exercise Science. While at SHSMF, Ashley helped collect gait data for numerous knee injury patients and she processed EMG data from gender landing studies. As of 2001, Ashley was enrolled in the graduate Kinesiology program at CU- Boulder.

Karen Zimmer, B.S.
Karen is currently an intern with the lower extremity team studying the effectiveness of walking poles; osteoarthritis bracing for high tibial osteotomy candidates; and proprioception in ACL-d, ACL-r, and normal populations. Karen will graduate in December of 1999 from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a masters of science degree in physical therapy.

Allison Gelvin
Allison is an undergraduate student at Depauw University studying Biology and aspires to be an orthopedic surgeon. While at SHSMF, Allison digitized jumping and landing data and processed EMG data related to those motions.

Kathryn Lukszys, B.S.
Kathryn Lukszys is currently completing her Masters of Science degree in Physical Therapy at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Her research projects at the Foundation included the assessment of strength and muscular activation firing patterns during rehabilitation exercises and the comparison of biceps tendon release pre and post surgery. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and has particular interest in research addressing to rehabilitation outcomes. Upon graduation, she plans to use her research skills to conduct clinical studies in a neurology-based physical therapy setting.

Amy E. Riviere, B.S.
Amy is currently an intern with the lower extremity team. She graduated from Bucknell University in 1998 with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Biology. Amy was also a member of the soccer team. She is planning to further her studies in the field of Sports Medicine. In her free time she enjoys skiing, running, coaching and playing soccer.

Kelly Spooner
Kelly is currently a physical therapy student completing her third year of physical therapy school at Grand Valley University in Allendale, MI. She is currently working on a project comparing proprioception and kinesthesia among individuals with ACL-deficient knees, ACL-reconstructed knees using bone-patellar grafts, and ACL-reconstructed knees using hamstring grafts. In addition to working at the Foundation, she is also currently completing a physical therapy clinical internship at the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Clinic involving both in-patient and out-patient care. After completion of her internship, Kelly will joint the Howard Head Physical Therapy, the rehabilitative branch of the Stedaman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Clinic.

Raili L. Cook, B.A.
Raili received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Dartmouth in 1999. Raili plans on furthering her education in sports psychology and aspires to work in the Sports Medicine field. While at the Foundation, Raili worked with the Lower Extremity group on functional knee bracing studies.

Adam Rosenweig
Adam is pursuing a BS degree in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan and aspires to attend medical school. While at SHSMF, Adam helped collect and digitize hamstring and quadriceps cross sectional area data derived from MRI.

Christopher Rich, B.A.
Chris received his BS degree from Cornell University in 1998 and is currently a 1st year medical student from Jefferson Medical College. While at SHSMF, Chris helped collect and digitize hamstring gait data and jumping and landing performance data.

Michael S.H. Kain, B.A.
Michael received his BA from Gettysburgh College in 1996 and is currently a 1st year medical student from Jefferson Medical College. While at SHSMF, Mike helped collect and digitize hamstring gait data and jumping and landing performance data.

Vicki Pittenger, MS
Vicki received her BS and MS degrees in Kinesiology from Illinois State University. While at SHSMF, Vicki helped collect and digitize graded treadmill walking gait data and jumping and landing performance data.

Melissa Anstey, BA
Melissa Started her internship in January 1999 and ended in August 1999. She received her BA from University of Vermont after completing an intensive Chinese Language Program at Harvard University and German course at Munich International School. Melissa worked extensively on jumping and landing and the differences in landing profiles between male and female athletes. As of 2002, Melissa was employed at Oratec.

Forrest Q Pecha, MS,ATC
Forrest received his BS from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1995 and his MS in Kinesiology from Illinois State University in 1998. While at SHSMF, Forrest helped collect and digitize jumping and landing performance data. Prior to the completion of his internship, Forest was hired by the SH Clinic and worked as a clinical athletic trainer. As of 2002, Forrest has been working as the head trainer for the USOC-Men and Women’s Alpine Ski Team.

John Willson, PT
John is currently a MSPT student from the University of Wisc-LaCross and elected a research rotation in lieu of an orthopedic rotation for his graduate degree. While at SHSMF, John helped collect and digitize walking with poles data which was published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. In 2001, John was working as the laboratory manager at the Joyner Sports Medicine Institute in Lexington Kentucky and ois now (2004) a doctoral student at the University of Delaware.

Henry Ellis, B.A.
Henry Ellis is currently pursuing his business degree at the University of Texas at Austin. Henry elected to participate in an internship to see if his interest in medicine could lead to a change in his career path. While at SHSMF, Henry helped collect and digitize simulated knee effusion data, hamstring gait data and walking with poles data. Henry is currently in medical school at UT-San Antonio.

Anne Morgan, MD
Anne received her BS from Indiana University in 1997 and is currently seeking entrance to medical school at Indiana University. While at SHSMF, Ann helped collect and digitize knee effusion gait data which was published in Clinical Biomechanics. Anne returned for another summer internship in 1999, working on knee effusion. As of 2003, Ann is completing her residency in internal medicine/cardiology medicine at CU Denver.
